Speaker 1
I love the story of black wealth because to me, in all of American history, it is the ultimate story of resilience. And it's never talked about that way. There's so much power in each and every one of your stories. We're here to share the lessons that helped create financial security, to be the financial role models that you are.
00:00:31:09 - 00:00:39:13
Speaker 2
We can't have this discussion without talking about trust in the black community. Who do we trust and who can we go to for sound financial advice?
00:00:39:14 - 00:00:43:10
Speaker 3
I think there's often a lack of trust in financial institutions.
00:00:43:10 - 00:00:46:10
Speaker 1
How do we rebuild that trust?
00:00:46:10 - 00:00:57:06
Speaker 3
Transparency is critical. Education. I think in order to be able to build trust, you have to have enough insight into what's happening to understand it.
00:00:57:09 - 00:01:21:11
Speaker 4
We're all kind of having the same experience, but no one taught us about money. When I was in college, I wanted to be the smart girl, but I wanted to be the cute girl, right? I was in my freshman year I got three credit cards. That changed my relationship with money. And I'll be honest, at one point it was a toxic relationship. Like we were friends. We weren't good friends.
00:01:21:13 - 00:01:38:03
Speaker 5
I think we got to reframe the “I can't afford”. I have actually told a lot of people, “you can't afford not to”. Most people that have accumulated wealth did it in a very boring way. It is about saving. Take advantage of your 401K. Do not be ashamed about it. You know, there are tools that can help people that are very inexpensive. I work in financial services. I have a financial advisor.
00:01:38:05 - 00:01:53:01
Speaker 6
I learned about what a 401k was as a rookie NFL player in the Baltimore Ravens locker room. Right? Like you shouldn't have to make it to the NFL to learn what your 401k is. Don't expect anybody to want this more than you.
00:01:53:03 - 00:02:07:20
Speaker 2
When we reach a certain level, we always want to bring others with us. We don't get there on our own. What I see is this beautiful sharing the sense of community where there is a binding thread.
00:02:07:22 - 00:02:30:10
Speaker 1
We need everybody out there to have this conversation with their friends, with their family. I'm excited because I know more and more of those conversations are taking place in our community. I just want to celebrate all of you and to celebrate your stories, to celebrate the shoulders that got you there. Cheers, everybody to the legacy.
00:02:30:12 - 00:02:31:17
Speaker 7
I’m glad that they didn’t give us wine.
